Why Every AHA Member Should Have a Defibrillator

Welcome AHA (SA) Members

Be part of a community that values safety and preparedness in the hospitality industry. AED Authority is proud to be the exclusive AED partner of AHA (SA).

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a major cause of death in Australia, resulting in over 30,000 fatalities annually.

This alarming statistic highlights the crucial need to prepare for such emergencies, particularly in public venues like licensed clubs and pubs. Having a defibrillator, also known as an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), in your venue is an invaluable investment.

Empowering Pubs, Bars and Hotels with Life Saving AEDs

A news segment from WIN News highlighted the recent donation of a defibrillator to the Royal Hotel Grong Grong/Welshpool Hotel by AED Authority. During the segment, Brian, 57, the manager of a pub in Welshpool expressed his gratitude towards bystanders who quickly acted to save his life when he suffered a cardiac arrest while on the job.

Is your establishment prepared?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a medical emergency during which the heart suddenly stops beating. It often occurs without warning and if left untreated, SCA usually causes death within minutes.

A SCA victim needs their heart rhythm to be reset quickly. The only way to do this is through defibrillation, using a simple to use, life-saving device called an automated external defibrillator (AED). Australia has one of the highest rates of SCA incidents in the world and unfortunately, the reality is that an ambulance is very unlikely to reach a SCA victim in time to save their life.

This makes owning an AED an invaluable investment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), AEDs and more.

What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a medical emergency where the heart suddenly stops beating, causing a loss of blood flow to the brain and organs. It can happen unexpectedly to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Immediate intervention is crucial for survival.

What is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device that saves lives by delivering a controlled electric shock to the heart. During a sudden cardiac arrest, the patient’s heart rhythm needs to be reset quickly, which can only be done through defibrillation using an AED. While starting immediate CPR is essential, it alone is not sufficient to reset the heart rhythm. An AED will deliver a controlled electric shock to get the heart beating normally again.

Why is an AED important for survival?

In the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, every minute without defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10%. Quick access to an AED can significantly increase the chances of survival.

Why does my hotel or pub need an AED?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can occur at any time and to anyone. Having an AED on-site ensures that you are prepared to respond quickly and effectively, significantly increasing the chances of survival for your guests and staff.

Is an AED safe and easy to use?

Absolutely! AEDs are user-friendly and safe to operate. Our range is designed for public access and requires no specialised training.

Once turned on, the AED provides the user with step-by-step instructions via simple graphics and clear voice commands until Emergency Services arrive, making them easy for anyone to use. Using an AED poses no risk—you cannot harm the person, be harmed, or be held liable.

Good Samaritan laws protect those who assist in emergencies.

How many AEDs do I need?

When determining the appropriate number of AED units and their placement, several factors should be considered. Except for small buildings, it is generally advised to have at least one AED unit per floor. The key goal of any effective AED program is to ensure a response time of three minutes or less from the victim’s collapse to the AED’s arrival. Use this objective as a guideline for deciding the number and locations of AED units. For further information on how to assess your site, click here.

Do I need training to use a defibrillator?

Defibrillators are designed for use by anyone, requiring no prior training.

They provide clear visual and verbal instructions to guide you through each step of the rescue.  As each defibrillator model varies slightly, it is beneficial to familiarise yourself with your chosen device.

Our resources section includes demonstration videos for all the devices we offer.

What are the legal protections for using an AED in Australia?

Good Samaritan laws in Australia protect individuals who assist someone in an emergency. As long as you act in good faith you are protected from liability when using an AED to help someone in need.
